Summarize the Pre-K Technology Applications TEKS:
Children use engaging, age‐appropriate, and challenging software; and technology to extend their knowledge and to enrich their learning of curriculum content and concepts. These technologies serve as important learning tools and are integrated throughout the instructional program. Children will also learn how technology can enhance our lives through the use of computers, voice/sound recorders, televisions, digital cameras, personal digital assistants, and MP3 devices or iPODs. They develop techniques for handling and controlling various devices, becoming increasingly confident and independent users of age‐appropriate technologies.
How do the Pre-K TEKS lay the foundation for student performance in future grades?
The Pre-K TEKS lay the foundation for student performance in future grades in that it allows them to identify technological devices, and determine what their function is. Pre-K students also gain a comfortability level with the use of technology and build an excitement for wanting to learn how the uses can beneficial to their daily lives. Thus, as they get older, they spend their time using the technology and becoming proficient instead of exploring what technology is and how it can help to enhance their learning.
Describe a spiraling or scaffolding curriculum that uses a series of TEKS in which students have multiple opportunities to master knowledge/skills.
A simple scaffolding curriculum that uses a series of TEKS can be identified when students learn about polygons. At a very simplistic level polygons are called shapes. Students can explore different shapes through the use of picture art on a word processor application. As students start to become more efficient with shapes and the use of technology, they can begin to identify sides and vertices and classify polygons based upon this information. They can further record their findings in a PowerPoint presentation that they could share with their peers. Later, students are able to use the internet to research the real world uses for shapes and their function within society. Students can create a report through any technological device of their choice (word, adobe, PowerPoint, videos, etc.) to present their findings to their peers. The students throughout their learning are building their knowledge starting with the basics and using technology to further their investigations and understanding.
